Route Introduction

Sugar and salt are indispensable in human life. During the Japanese occupation era, the sugar making and salt producing industries were industrialized and became significant industries in Tainan. This route takes us north from Cigu along the shore to Beimen Jingzaijiao Tile- Paved Salt Fields, getting a glimpse of the drying and making process of salt and the history of it. Then we will go to Xiaolong Cultural Park in Jiali to visit the old sugar- making factory and Exhibition Hall of Siraya Culture. The last stop will be the Zongye Sugar Factory. We will have a glimpse of the glory of the sugar-making industry during the Japanese occupation era. This route bears witness to the rise and fall, as well as the transformation, of salt and sugar industries, their positions in the world trading system and the roles they play common people’s everyday life.
