Zengwen Creek’s nine bends and 18 turns, with astronomy, hydrology and humanities

Route Introduction

  •

Zengwen Creek is the main river that spans across the east and west of Tainan City, and the largest reservoir in Taiwan, Zengwen Reservoir, is located upstream.  As Zengwen Creek leaves the reservoir area and enters the midstream, near Yujing and Danei Districts, continuous sub-streams can be observed flowing all over the villages and farming ponds. One of the main towns located on the banks of Zengwen Creek, Yujing, is one of the main towns in mid-stream of Zengwen Creek. Formerly known as the Tapani, is home of the indigenous Tevorangh Tribe for centuries. This place was also considered to be a very important location on the route Pingpu ethnic group moved along Zengwen Creek to the inner mountains. In 1915, Yu Qingfang and others in xilai yu plotted to rebel against the Japanese government and were arrested. Ding Jiang, Jun Luo and other accomplices fled to Tavocan and Tapani areas, and resulted in bloody conflicts, which was historically known as "the Tapani incident." In 1920, the name of the Tapani was changed into a name similar to Japanese - "Yujing", which was where the name of Yujing came from.

This route will take students to explore how the residents who live in the inner mountains coexist with Zengwen Creek and understand the impact of Tapani Incident on Tainan, even on Taiwan at the time. In addition, because the mid-stream area of Zengwen Creek is mostly hilly, the protruding hills have become suitable places for star-gazing, and the Nan-ying Planetarium is located on the Er-Xi-Gong mountain by Zengwen Creek, and has become an important facility for astronomical observation and interactive education. Walking into Zengwen Creek’s nine bends and 18 turns, with astronomy, hydrology and humanities all in front of us.
