Siraya People’s Migration and Their Journey to Settlement

Route Introduction

  •
With the development of Tainan Science Park, archeologists have been conducting more than 10 years of excavation and research. The Tainan Science Park Branch of Prehistoric Museum is exhibiting a rich and complete collection of artifacts from 4000 years ago to the society and material culture of the Siraya people. The Siraya tribe was quite active in Tainan area, comprised of four major tribes: Xingang, Mujialiuwan, Xiaolong, and Madou. However, their living spaces shrank through generations and the policies on claiming further land for settlement. The tribal people either moved to the hillside or blended into the contemporary society. For example, Kabua Sua tribe, meaning the“Kapok Tribe”,still keeps its traditional cultural heritage of the Sirayan ancestors. In 1790, the Xiaolong tribe was moved to Dongshan district of Tainan because of the policies at that time. Kabua Sua keeps the most complete Kuwa architectural group.
