Taijang was the place where the oceanic Taiwan story that you knew not of took place. The An-nan district of Tainan was called Taijang. It was here that the opening scene of the development of Taiwan was staged. It also became the adopted hometown of new migrants. This place used to be the most beautiful internal waterway in Taiwan; a river delta of life. The Cengwen Creek made this place fertile but it also flooded the place often. Facing the ever-changing river route, the residents developed a habit to worship the creek, called “zou-xi-liu” (skirting the creek). Framed by this event, the ancient people comprehended that the way of survival is through reverence to heaven and earth. The pattern became accepted: the creek changes its route; the people move along and save the village of misery; people who suffer from these natural disasters are comforted in. Yuanhai Buddha, an old martyr, became the patron god of the village.
