The An-Nan District of Tainan used to be called Taijang. In 1823, Cengwen Creek changed its route; the internal ocean became arable land. Many people moved to the north of the creek to form settlements in today's jiangjun ,Beimen and Xuejia. They built schools in their villages at the end of the 19th century; hence they were called the sixteen villages of Taijang.
