The Old Jiang’s House at LuTauYang

The Old Chiang’s House is registered as a “community” according to the Law of Cultural Assets with Tainan City Government. It is a fairly completely preserved southern Fujian residential building. According to family records, the Jiangs moved here at around 1721 A.D. during the Kangxi Era of Qing Dynasty from ShaoAn County of Fujian to the current site of LuTauYang at Nanxi District and has been passed on for 24 generations.  Jiang’s settlement had not divided up estate within the family for more than 10 generations. In addition to the family committee and company management settlement, Jiang’s old house still houses more than 20 families. The entire ancient settlement includes earth-brick houses, brick walls, tin houses, concrete walls, bamboo walls and other building types, with a total of more than 130 houses.  Although there have been renovations, construction must be done in accordance with the settlement norms, there are quite a number of houses more than a hundred years old. The lotus ponds shaped like crescent moon still maintain the old form from more than 200 years ago and was a must-equipped water storage for the ancient Jiang community. The Old Houses of the Jiangs have joined the community construction project as early as 1993. To this day, it still maintains the traditional agricultural settlement in southern Fujian, which gives us a glimpse of the early farmers’ life in Zengwen Creek area.
