Department Building of Taiwan Literature, National Cheng Kung University

Located on Li-Hsing Campus, the department building of Taiwan Literature is a designated municipal ancient heritage. Originally it was the Arm Wi-Shu Hospital during the Japanese rule. After WWII, the ROC government came to Taiwan. It was initially called the military hospital under the army training department, and later renamed “Arm 804 General Hospital.” In 2000, the Ministry of National Defense transferred the entire base to National Cheng Kung University and was later designated as Tainan Municipal ancient heritage. In 2010, the ancient heritage investigation and planning report was completed and the renovation work was started. It has been used as the department building of Taiwan Literature since 2013.

The exterior of the building is a typical red-brick arch circle, the roof truss in the house is made of redwood from Alishan, the high windows face the south to bring in natural wind and sunlight, and the roof is equipped with a copper ventilation tower, which achieves indoor and outdoor air convection and lighting effect, the best representative of green architecture. It has been transformed from the original purpose of treating physical ailments to an important field for pursuing literature and nurturing students today.
