Ginza: Commercial tracks from harbors to modern streets

Route Introduction

Snail Lane

In fact, this is the contemporary name for this street block, which is composed of laneways that were constructed in the Qing Dynasty, and the current clearly-defined block is the result of the correction of the urban area during the Japanese occupation when the street block was called "Omiya Ku". Because writer Ye, Shitao once lived here, in the 2016 historic district improvement plan, his literary work "The Past is Like a Cloud" was quoted as: "I bought an old house as my residence at the end of this snail lane, what I loved about it was the lane is located behind the most prosperous Miyako theater in Ximending of Tainan, like a quiet valley in the downtown area", and then it was called Snail Lane. Today, the street has assumed a new look, transformed into a street space full of snail installation works of art, and in addition to the snails, there are also sections of text art scenes accompanying them. More importantly, Ye, Shitao's account reveals that his old home was drafted for air defense purposes and the family had to be relocated into a small tile house in the war; On the other hand, it also reflects the lively Ximending right outside of this quiet alley. This is the process of Tainan Fucheng gradually becoming Tainan City since the implementation of urban renovation in 1911, so that today, people who make a living and come to visit are most likely to feel the spatial characteristics and emotions.
