Route Introduction

“The Spring” Square
Site of former Tainan Canal Dock

The site of the Tainan Canal Dock, which was built during the Japanese occupation, was one of the important channels for goods to be shipped into Tainan. In the 1970s, Tainan Canal gradually lost its shipping function, and the water quality around the dockyard was also polluted, and there was a proposal to fill it up. In the 1980s, it was rebuilt into a Chinatown for entertainment and snacks, and after 1993, the implementation of the Haian Road widening plan and other factors caused Chinatown to gradually decline and decay. In 2016, under the leadership of the Tainan municipal government, Chinatown was demolished and the Dutch MVRDV architectural team was invited to re-plan and design, using the lagoon as a concept in an attempt to connect the image of a former dock. Some of the remnants of the columns and beams of Chinatown are preser ved as objects for preser ving urban memory. It was later named "The Spring" and officially opened in March 2020.
