Campus Plants

Why do students need to know about campus plants? Many tree species profoundly impact human life, and by knowing plants, students may understand the connection between daily life and plants. There are numerous plants in NCKU, and each plant has its background. Students would enjoy the school landscape's beauty while walking or cycling on the campus after understanding some unique plants.

Indian Moringa

Moringa is a plant of Moringaceae, native to Africa, Madagascar, and South Asia. The tree is deciduous, with a height of more than 10 meters, with an umbrella-shaped trunk, and the bark is light gray in color. Mutual leaf sequence, 3 plume-like re-leaf, small egg-shaped leaves. In Summer, small ivory white blossoms can be seen with a light-green shade, fruit pods can be 30 ~ 50 centimeters long, and seeds are dark brown in color with 3 short white wings on their surface. During the Japanese rule, Fujine Yoshiharu ( 藤根吉春 ), director of the Agricultural Test Farm of the Taiwan Governor's Office, introduced moringa from India and Java in 1910, more than a hundred years ago. Moringa leaves are edible vegetables; oil can be pressed from seeds with medicinal values, so it is reputed as “the tree of life."

The Banyan Tree

Banyan is a large evergreen tree species with a broad crown, thick trunk, bark from light gray to brown, and white glutinous sap. A lot of aerial roots grow from the stems and form prop roots once they reach the ground to help support the huge tree body; Obovate leaves with stipules of linear-lanceolate; syconus fruits that are loved by birds. The big banyan tree in the Banyan Garden of NCKU was planted by Japanese Crown Prince Hirohito (who succeeded to the throne as Emperor Showa in 1926) on April 21, 1923 (12th Year of Taisho) when he was here to review the military parade of the 2nd Wing of Taiwan Infantry. Over nearly a century, the tree has absorbed the essence of sun and moon and has become gigantic. Its tall and beautiful figure has been adopted by Cathay Life Insurance as its corporate trademark and has become well-known in Taiwan.
