The Banyan Garden is a famous landmark of National Cheng Kung University. Japanese Crown Prince Hirohito planted the lush old Banyan tree in 1923. The three classical-style buildings to the south of the Banyan Garden are the former barracks of the Japanese Army Second Infantry in Taiwan. They are currently used by the Department of History, Department of Industrial Engineering, and the Graduate Institute of Art Studies. All three buildings are typical second-phase permanent barracks buildings featuring elevate d void slabs, surrounding corridors, continuous Roman arches, and Shimizu red-brick exterior walls. It is one of the very few surviving Japanese infantry barracks in Taiwan. To the east of the Banyan Garden is the elegant and beautiful Cheng-Kung Lake. The construction of the sports field in 1970 created this beautiful lake. The lake is surrounded by bright-red fascinating phoenix flower, which is both the school flower and the school crest.
