Route Introduction
The Remains of the Xiao-Dong Old City Walls and the Minor West Gate in Tainan City Wall Remains
|Xiao-Dong Section and the Little West Gate|
The Xiao-Dong section of the city wall remains a unique landscape on the NCKU campus. It witnesses the history of Tainan City. The wall was built on the 53rd year of the Qianlong (1788) era of the Qing Dynasty after Shuang-Wen, Lin Incident. Built with the "traditional ramming method with mixed cement," the banyan trees have taken roots and flourished h ere, which adds a sense of nostalgia to the remains. The Minor West Gate was relocated here in 1970 and placed next to the ruins of the city wall. It is the only ancient city gate in any Taiwan campus, demonstrating how NCKU pioneers preservation of historical buildings. These two monuments endow the learning environment with a rich historical ambiance.
