Tracing the Origin: The Beginning of NCKU
|Former Tainan Industrial Higher School - School building and memorial gate|
Where is the oldest building in NCKU? The answer is the "Principle of Chemistry Laboratory" located at the back of GeChi Hall on Cheng Kung campus, the South Building of the Department of Physics. The quaint one-story building was completed in 1930. NCKU students of the first year took their admission oath here, but it was also used as a laboratory and administrative office by various departments. The construction of the campus during the creation phase continued until 1934. The buildings remain today include the NCKU museum today, Ge-Chi Hall, the North Building of the Department of Physics, the New Garden, the department buildings of Industrial Engineering, Information Engineering, Resources Engineering, and others.
In 1956, the school was upgraded from Taiwan Provincial Institute of Technology to Taiwan Provincial Cheng Kung University. The white archway at the intersection of Sheng-Li Road and Da-Syue Road is the memorial gate built to commemorate the upgrade and restructuring. The name of the school was written horizontally on the outside (west) of the archway, and the school motto "Exhaust Sciences to Achieve Knowledge" was written on the inside (east).
