Route Introduction

The West Market

The West Market, also named as Big Market, it was a new market established in 1905 during the Japanese rule period. It also introduced the concept of public health and was the first public market in Taiwan. It used to be the largest and modern market in south Taiwan. The West Market has experienced wind disasters, war damages, and conflagrations. Since the completion of the restoration in 2017, many old-fashioned textile shops are back in. Additional buildings on the west side of the market was demolished and renovated to become the Asakusa Youth Shopping Area is now conspicuous.
