Route Introduction

                                   Xin-Hua Old Street

After establishing the Xin-Hua County Office in Tainan Prefecture in 1920, it executed the "urban correction" project. The present Zhong-Zheng road widened from 6 meters to 12 meters.

In 1921, the cloth merchant Lin Mao-Ji, spent 3000 dollars to hire a craftsman, nicknamed "Lò-Kha-Siū-á," which means a tall guy. He builds a western-style street house (No. 435 Zhong-Zheng road); the western-style street house has increasingly influenced the neighboring shops and even started to imitate. Around 1926, the west side of today's Zhong-Zheng road was rebuilt into western-style street houses. The street houses on the east side were demolished and rebuilt in 1937 when the road widened and the drainage ditch project started.

In 1995, the Xin-Hua Town Office planned an urban transformation plan and widened Zhong-Shan road from 12 meters to 15 meters, thus demolishing the original street houses. Professor Wang Ming-Heng from the Department of Architecture of NCKU took the lead in launching the slogan to preserve the old street. Finally, on January 25, 1999, at the public hearing on "Development, Preservation, and Expansion to Old Street, "twenty-two households approved of preservation and five in opposition, and eight votes without opinion. It confirms the conservation of d Street House on Zhong-Zheng road. It is a crucial case of promoting the preservation of regional cultural assets for local people.
