Route Introduction
Jia-Li Ding-Bu Village
No. 117, Dingbu, Jiali Dist., Tainan City 722, Taiwan
Ding-Bu Village, formerly known as Xia-Ying, was originally where Zheng Cheng-Kung set up a garrison barrack to reclaim and cultivate. The ancestors planted sugar extensively to develop a "Thn̂g-phō͘" in the past, which means traditional sugar manufacturing is more than 200 years. The sugar industry became the most significant income source for the Ding-Bu Village after establishing the sugar company during the Japanese rule period. In 1905, the Jia-Li Sugar Factory, formerly known as the Soulang Sugar Factory, was the first new type of sugar factory set up by the Meiji Sugar Company in Taiwan. As a result, many sugarcanes were planted around for the sugar factory to harvest and produce sugar. Later, due to the development of the traditional light industry, the Soulang Sugar Factory closed down. However, Ding-Bu Village, known as a Sugar Town, has been striving to revive the ancient sugar making techniques and local sugar industry culture in recent years. Residents have learned from sugar masters and even collected local cultural and historical materials and oral anecdotes of the sugar industry to create the first retro "Thn̂g-phō͘" by using traditional implements for making sugar and adheres to traditional techniques.
