Shan-Hua Sugar Factory
No. 310, Ximeili, Shanhua Dist., Tainan City 741, Taiwan
The traditional sugar-making technology in Taiwan is very backward, and the quality of sucrose is low. After the Japanese rule period, they actively promoted Taiwan's sugar industry, replacing tea leaves and made sugar an important export good of Taiwan. In the early days of the Japanese rule period, the Japanese government encouraged capitalists to build mechanized sugar factories to replace traditional sugar-making gradually. In 1940, Taiwan's sugar industry's development peaked, with 43 sugar refinery sugar factories. Due to Taiwan's economic transformation and many imported sugars, the sugar factories were gradually closed down, and the output was also reduced. Tainan Shan-Hua Sugar Factory (1904) and Yunlin Hu-Wei Sugar Factory (1907) still had sugar production functions in Taiwan. Shan-Hua Sugar Factory was founded by the Taiwanese capital "Tainan Sugar Company." In 1909, it was acquired by "Taiwan Sugar Company," since Shan-Hua, formerly known as "Wan-Li street," is named as "Wan-Li Sugar Company." With the transformation and development of each sugar factory, there are Shan-Tang cultural relics museums, a hydrophilic Park, a century-old camphor tree, an ice department, the Shan-Hua Sugar Factory Cultural Park. In recent years, Taiwan Sugar intends to revive the sugar factory. It has opened and highly welcome passengers to visit the sugar-making process, cultural relics museum, Japanese brick dormitory, railway, and others to connect the Shan-Hua Sugar Factory's history.
