The Banyan Garden is a well-known landmark of National Cheng Kung University. The largest tree was planted by the then crown prince Hirohito himself in 1923. The building to the south was a dorm of the 2nd Infantry of Japanese Army. Today, the building is shared by three departments. It is one of the very few Japanese military buildings preserved in Taiwan. Cheng Kung Lake, the beautiful scenic lake to the east was built in 1970 and is surrounded by red phoenix flowers – the school flower and school emblem of NCKU.
