Route Introduction

Ancient House of Liu, Rui-Shan

The ancient house was built in approximately 1840. It was used as the background of《Madame Chen》, a famous novel written by Japanese novelist Shoji Shoichi and it won the first Great Eastern Asia Literary Award. Mr. Liu, Ruishan was a successful entrepreneur and a baptized Christian. His good virtues have been remembered by his descendants. His business logo was“Heyuan”, so there are many plaques of couplets in the ancient house with the characters“He”and“Yuan”. Mr. Liao, Jichun, who was an acting principal of Tainan First Senior High School, painted“Front Yard with Banana Trees”,depicting the scenery when he stayed in this house.
