Qing Dynasty Government Official’s Trail-Chunan Old Street and Zhenbei Fang

Route Introduction

Zongye Street

Zongan Street used to be called Zongye Street, it used to be the passage the general officer of the Qing Dynasty troops took to his barracks. This was the thoroughfare for traffic entering Tainan City through where the North Gate was; it quickly became a hub for commerce. For defensive reasons, the street is in the form of an“I”with temples on both ends. The temples served two purposes: They are places where people prayed for peace and safety, and secondly, they were also crucial spots for defense. Therefore, two temples worshipping the god of the earth (Tudi Gong), the upper and the lower, were built on this street.
