The Big North Gate was built with wood fences in 1725 (3rd Year of Yongzheng Period, Qing Dynasty). After the Lin, Shuangwen rebellion was quelled, the gate was renovated in 1788 (53rd year of Qianlong Period, Qing Dynasty) with bricks. There were military barracks inside and outside of this gate, administered by the General Taiwan Military Bureau in the city, the highest military office in Taiwan. Out of the North Gate was a martial-drilling field where officials conducted drills and reviewed troops.
