Chikan Tower

Chikan Tower has had many names. The most commonly- known ones are “Chikan Tower”or“Provintia.” The multiple names suggest the changes of its status. It was originally a Western designed structure used as the administration center during the Dutch colonial era. It then became an arsenal when Zheng, Chenggong was in power. It was completely destroyed by an earthquake during the Qing Dynasty and was reconstructed into the Chinese-style building we see today. In the Japanese colonial time, it was an army hospital. The significances of the transitions in roles are themselves a microcosm of the historical development of Tainan. Now, it's far removed from a military purpose and has become a good place for outdoor concerts and picnics.
