Route Introduction

Nan-Chang Bao'An Temple

Bao'An Temple, the center of the Wang-Ye (Local Lords) belief in the West
District, shows the prosperity of business and harbor culture here ever since
the Qing Dynasty.

No. 90 Bao'An Road, Central West District, Tainan City

Nan-Chang (The South Factor y) is situated at the mouth of Fu'An Creek. During Dao-Guang Era, a Wu family from Gu-Dong township, Jin-Jiang County of Quan-Zhou, China, then settled down around south of the little West Gate, ran a ship-building factory that repairs ships as well. Local people called it Nan-Chang. Along with a ship factory at Lau-Gu-Shi (coral stone) harbor run by Chen Family, these two factories are called "North and South Small Factories," contrary to the "Big Factories" run by the government military warships workshop. Years later, people no longer cared for the sizes; they went ahead and called the south factory.

Nan-Chang area was very prosperous because of its proximity to the harbor, and there are many stories. One of the ten stony Bi-Xi Tablets bestowed by Emperor Qianlong to commemorate Shuang-Wen, Lin Incident is currently in Bao'An Temple. When this stony Bi- Xi arrived in An-ping port, it accidentally fell into the sea, and the remaining nine stone tablets and the stony Bi-Xi's were placed in a Fu Kang An Sheng Shrine Temple in the Great South Gate. As for the remaining stone, tablets were shipped to Chia-Yi and build another stone turtle to make up. Later, the other nine Bi-Xi's were transferred to the front of Chi-Kan Tower.

With the siltation of Tai-Jiang Lagoon, where the stony tortoise fell into the ocean became an aquafarm. In 1916, an aquafarm owner at Xin-Ding dreamt that a divine object underneath his aquafarm would like to resurface, and an oracle from Bao'An Temple showed the same thing: why the tortoise was lifted with everybody's help.

It was first placed on Bao'An Road in front of the Tien-chi-tan after it was fished out of the water, then it was moved to the west of Bao'An Temple. After many times of moving, it was finally settled on where it is today after the reconstruction of Bao'An Temple in 1985.

The South Factory, though situated outside of the Minor West Gate, became quite prosperous because of its function as a trading port. The Fu'An Creek used to enter Tai-Jiang Lagoon around here. The creek follows our tracing steps from inside the city to this place outside the city and accompanies us to tour and grasp the sights and shapes of Sió-Sai-Kha.
