Five Kuwas and Five Surnames

In addition to the Grand Kuwa,there are also the East Kuwa (Soulangh Community–The Chengs), Southwestern Kuwa (Soulangh Community–The Duans), Southeastern Kuwa (Toroko Community–The Changs), Central Kuwa (Madou Community–The Lis), and North Kuwa (Taivoan Community– the Pans), a total of five family kuwas.

All families of the same surname lived concentrated near the family kuwa. The family kuwas carried out the tradition and took care of all businesses and events in the family. Kabuasua people started marrying people from outside the tribe only after the 1980s, so the families’ social boundaries are still clear and intact.

73.7% of households in Kabuasua still maintain their faith in worshipping Alid (Alimu). The kuwas perform the functions of religious beliefs, gatherings, meetings, youth clubs, and others. in
Sirayan tribes. Besides the important annual rituals and ceremonies, kuwas is the center for negotiations over family affairs. Because Kabuasua retains the field and traditions of family kuwas, it is the community with the highest density of Sirayan kuwas in Taiwan.
