The Grace of Yanshui Harbor: Rejuvenation of Yanshui and Hopi Settlements

Route Introduction

Yanshui Catholic Church

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Tainan was established in the 1960s. Bishop Lo Kuang emphasized localization of Catholicism, so the Holy Spirit Church in Yanshui, together with many other churches in Tainan, was built in Chinese style.

The architecture of the church includes the main chapel, Jitiendien, Chinese Holy Mother Pavilion, and the activity building, Yan-Guang Hall. The chapel was originally built by German Franciscan Pastor, Hugolinus Schozz, in 1955. It was built of wood and damaged by termites.

The 5th Pastor Li Shao-Feng took over the parish in 1969 and finally finished the renovation in 1969 with the motifs of the island's native features and Chinese elements, such as lanterns, red pillars, and dragons. Now murals cover almost all of the interior walls, depicting scenes from the Bible, but with most figures looking Asian and wearing Chinese- style clothing.

The "Chinese Holy Mother Pavilion", built in 1976, is a small hexagonal pavilion with the wooden statue of holy mother and holy son in the middle and portraits with the themes of "sorrow", "glory", and "Joy" from the Rosary. The entire group of architecture symbolizes the East meeting the West in harmony.
