The Grace of Yanshui Harbor: Rejuvenation of Yanshui and Hopi Settlements

Route Introduction

Changduanshu Signal Station

Changduanshu community became a settlement relying on rice and sugarcane farming due to the irrigation from Bazhang Creek. During the Japanese occupation era, it was the sugarcane collection area of the new Toysoeyto Co. Ltd (sold to Meiji Sugar Company in 1927).

It had a railway system connecting Nanjing and Wushu sugar factories. Two of the major branching railroads leading to sugarcane plantations intersected at Changduanshu community. Later, the two branches were extended to Xinying and Annei sugar factories.

Locating at the focal point of four sugar railroads, the signal station was boasted to be the largest one in Taiwan sugar industry. The mission of the signal station was to manage the traffic of busy sugarcane cargo trains. In order to monitor the traffic, telephones were available on the train and at the signal station.

Changduanshu Signal Station was manned 24 hours during its peak era; facilities, such as beds and large stoves were installed for the staff. However, after the sugar factories were shut down one by one, the railroads and the signal station were also abandoned.

At present, this place belongs to Shian Li of Houpi. The community development association is collaborating with the Dept. of Architecture and Landscape of Nanhua University in a project, called "Taiwan Architectural Corners", making it a must-visit spot in Houpi.
