The Water Resource of Tainan Area

Route Introduction

Shanshang Water Treatment Plant

Xin-Chuan No. 59-18, Xin-Chuan Li, Shanshang District, Tainan City

In 1912, the Governor of Taiwan appointed Hamano Yashiro to build the running water system, known as Tainan Waterway, to improve the drinking water conditions so to prevent infectious diseases in Tainan area.

The project, which was originally planned to be completed in four years, was delayed due to the impact of World War I and was completed in 1922. Tainan Waterway, located in Shanshang District of Tainan City, was divided into a water source area and water treatment pool area.

The water was sourced from Zengwen Creek, pumped to the sedimentation tank and then to the filter chamber. With filtering materials and chemicals, the water was purified to meet the standard of drinking water, and was then stored in Shanshang water pool.

Due to the height difference between the storing pool and the city, the drinking water could be transported to the populated area with natural gravity. The construction of Tainan Waterway solved the drinking water shortage problem for the 60,000 to 70,000 people living in Tainan at that time.

The maximum supply of water was 12,000 cubic meters per day, which was sufficient for the use of 100,000 people, and the water pressure could reach the top floor of Hayashi Department store, the tallest building in 1932. Tainan Waterway was the tenth waterway project in the Taiwan Hygiene Serial Project. It was also an important driving force for the modernization of Tainan.
