Hatta Yoichi Memorial Park

N0. 66, Jianan Li, Guantian District, Tainan City

Hatta Yoichi Memorial Park is located on the northern side of Wushantou Reservoir. The park consists of four Japanese-styled housing estates–Hatta Residence, Akasaka Residence, Abe Residence, and Tanaka do Ichikawa Residence.

The original structures were built in 1921 as the staff housing for the Japanese engineers who built the reservoir and their families. The houses were abandoned after the Japanese left Taiwan after World War II. The park was established to commemorate the contribution of Hatta Yoichi and his colleagues to Jianan Plain.

To reconstruct the houses, the architecture team used the remaining structures on the spot, with the pictures and documents obtained from Hatta descendants. The reconstruction work was completed in 2011.

The interior furniture in the residences were donated by citizens of Kanazawa city of Ishikawa, the hometown of Hatta. The residences come in two types: twin-unit and single-unit. The "Tanaka and Ichikawa" residence is a twin-unit Japanese-style building, originally assigned to mid- rank officials.

It accommodated two families, with independent entrances and exits. It was dwelt by mechanical technicians Tanaka Giichi and Ichikawa Katsuji. Hatta Residence was dwelt by the Hattas family, and a western-styled study was added to it after Hatta was promoted. Akasaka Residence was first dwelt by mechanical chief Nagakura, and then assigned to Akasaka Shin, Director of Wushantou Administration.

Akasaka's eldest daughter Ayako later married Hatta's eldest son Teruo. Abe Residence was assigned to dam-building chief Abe Sadahisa, who succeeded Hatta Yoichi as the director.
