Route Introduction

Aqueduct Bridge of Guantian Creek

East to Guantian Bridge, Guantian District, Tainan City

An aqueduct bridge is a called a “shuilu” bridge in Taiwanese, meaning a “water way”. The important function of the bridge is to transport water, so that the high- lying water source can be transported north- south through the irrigation system and the aqueduct bridge.

Since 1921, a total of seven aqueduct bridges had been built on Jianan Plain. From south to north: there are "Zengwun Creek Aqueduct", "Dutou Creek Aqueduct", "Guantian Creek Aqueduct", "Guizhong Creek Aqueduct", "Jishui Creek Aqueduct", "Bazhang Creek Aqueduct", and "Puzi Creek Aqueduct".

Water can be transported from Zengwun Creek to areas that were only used for dry-farming before. The system also helped to reduce the excessive salt in the non-arable salt-damaged areas. Crop has therefore been increased significantly.

In 1930, four years after the completion of the water supply of Wushantou Reservoir, rice production was increased by four times! The aqueduct bridges has been playing a key role for distributing water in Jianan Irrigation system.

The lower level of the aqueduct bridge was a water channel, and the upper level was a reinforced concrete bridge for pedestrians and motorcycles. The Zengwun, Dutou and Guantian Creek aqueducts are listed as the city-level monuments of Tainan, which even allow cars passing in one direction and were important north-south traffic passage then.
