Five-Canal Harbor Area: The Water Gods and Import-Export Tradesmen

Route Introduction

Shuixian Temple

No. 1, Shennong St., West Central Dist., Tainan City 700, Taiwan (R.O.C.)

Shuixian Temple worships 5 water- related deities: Da Yu, Han Ao, Hsian Yu, Wu Zixu, and Qu Yuan. It was set at the tip of the old Nanshi Harbor, a transportation hub of both land and water traffic.

It started off as a cottage with a thatched roof and had to be repaired many times. In 1741, merchant Chen Fongchun and others rebuilt the temple, by filling up Nanshi Canal as the front court yard of the temple. In 1763, Su Wanli and fellow businessmen chipped in to repair the temple. In the following year, the land acquired from silted harbor canal was occupied by nearby residents. Taiwan magistrate Jiang Yunxun ordered the illegal construction being torn down, the front yard enlarged and a stony plate was established inside of the Sanchuan Gate. The government order was carved on the plate to indicate the boarders of the temple land.

After the riot of pirate Tsai Qien, three traders became renowned for their participation in quenching the riot. The members of the three trades were summoned to donate money for managing public affairs. In 1827, Sanyi Hall was established at the side wing of Shuixian Temple, commonly known as "Three Traders' Council Office", which earned the temple very high social reputation. The three traders dominated the development and operation of local affairs as the media between the government and local organizations.

There's only one segment left with Shuixian Temple. It is no longer one of the most magnificent temples in Tainan as it was in the olden days. Its low ground level in the five canals region can be observed in a local saying – "The doorstep of the Heavenly Emperor's temple is at the height of Shuixian Temple's eaves." This saying mocks the temple’s low location. It is now surrounded by Shuixian Temple Market which features many must-visit local gourmet food stalls.
