Migration and Settlement of the Siraya Tribe

Route Introduction

The Grand Kuwa of Jibeshua

I follow the worshipping rituals of the culture,
and therefore I exist.

In the tribe of Jibeshua in Dongshan District, there are the eastern, western, southern and northern kuwas, in addition to the Grand Kuwa. Alid (A-Li-Mu) is worshipped in the Grand Kuwa, which is also the major venue for the Night Sacrifice.

The ceremony is held annually on Alid's birthday on the 4th day of the 9th month on lunar calendar, which also implies the relationship between Man and Nature marked by the festivals. The Night Sacrifice comes in two main parts: "Worshipping and thanking Alid with sacrificed Pigs" and "Chanting songs to show respect to Alid".

The ceremony is roughly divided into 6 stages: (1) Offering the Pigs, (2) Inviting Alid, (3) Tapping the Pigs, (4) Covering with Cloth, (5) Turning over the Pigs, and (6) Chanting Songs. Among these, chanting is performed by tribal women walking in a circle hand-in-hand, dancing and pacing to the music.

The influence from Han culture has made it impossible to know the entire contents of the songs, all we know is the songs are chanted in the traditional tribal language. Even so, the Night Sacrifice still carries with it the culturally rejuvenating significance of the Siraya culture and its continuation.

Now, "Siraya Night Sacrifice at Jibeshua, Dongshan" has been proclaimed an Important National Folk Heritage by the Ministry of Culture according to the Cultural Heritage Preservation Act.
