Route Introduction

Tang De-Zhang Memorial Park(Former Taisho Park)

Minsheng Circle, Zongxi District, Tainan City

This place had been an important landmark in Tainan since the Japanese occupational era. The location was originally called, "Yifong Pavilion" , the residence of Lin Chao-Ying (1739-1816), who was praised as the only artist in Taiwan by Japanese scholars.

The land was collected by the Japanese for firefighting purposes. A statue of Kodama Gentaro, the 4th governor to Taiwan, was built and known as the stony statue by local people. Later, it became Taisho Park, and was renamed Zhongzheng Green Park, and then Minsheng Green Park after the war.

To commemorate lawyer Tang De-Zhang, who was executed here during the 228 Incident, it is now called Tang De-Zhang Memorial Park. Seven major roads radiate from the traffic circle around this park: Zhongshan, Gongyuan, Mingshen, Zhongzheng, Nanmen, Kaishan, and Qingnian.

Many works of Ye Shi-Tao, like "Legend of Monastery" , "Night Raid", and "Red Shoes", mentioned this place. Female writer Chen Ye also depicted in detail the death of Tang De-Zhang in her works.
