Wu Family Garden" was built in Daoguang Era of Qing Dynasty by a gentleman named Wu Shang-Xin, and was reputed as one of the four most famous gardens in Taiwan. Only a small part of the original estate survived till today. The Wu family was one of the richest families in Tainan then, so its family estate was was famous for its wealth and landscape design. The land was later collected by the Japanese government. The neighboring area was re-planned by Yata Kareshi in 1910. Tainan Public House was built on the land from the funds of rich citizens and the government. It was renamed "Tainan Public Meeting Hall" and became a very important meeting point and venue of public education for Tainan citizens in 1923. Famous politicians, literary people, and intellectuals, such as Cai Pei-Huo and Lien Hen, had delivered their speeches here. It was said that in the 1930s, writer Ye Shi-Tao rushed here to meet with Japanese writer Mitsuru Nishikawa who was invited to give a speech here. After the war, the public hall was renamed "Zhongshan Hall" , and then "Social Education Hall" . In September 2018, a "Wang Yu- De Memorial Hall" was built near the pavilion in the rear end of Wu Family Garden to commemorate this important write and activist of the movement of speaking Taiwanese.
