Exploring Old Occupations in Tainan

Route Introduction

Old Yung-Ruy-Jen Pastries

No. 181 Yung Fu Road, Sec. 2, Central and Western District, Tainan

Following traditional customs, various kinds of Chinese-style pastries play a critical role in all festive occasions, for example, longevity peach-shaped buns, red mochi cakes, prosperity rice cakes,"grand cake" for wedding, and the pastries celebrating a baby's birth.

A local saying shows the custom well: "round buns for one month old, peach-shaped buns for four months old and turtle-shaped cakes for one year old". Early in the Japanese colonial era, Chang Yen, the founder of the bakery, and his friends together started the pastry store "Yongruizhen" on today's Puji Street. The store was unfortunately bombed and destroyed in the Pacific war.

After the war, Chang Yen split with them business partners and opened his own store at the current location. This store was renamed as "Jiu" Yongruizhen (jiu means old in Chinese) to indicate its origin and tradition. This store is famous for its Chinese-style wedding cakes, and was even commissioned to design the wedding cakes for the daughter of Ho Yu-Li, an extremely rich businessman from Tainan.
