Tainan Centennial Geta Sandals Store

   The "bak-kiah" in Taiwanese dialect is a kind of geta sandals, a traditional attire item kept from the Japanese occupation era. In humid, rainy days, wooden geta sandals with thick soles helped people move through muddy area with ease.
 
   There was hence a saying: "One makes living easier wearing bak-kiah. Your house will be filled with treasure and gold." Zhengxin Shoe Store has been standing at the corner of the circle where Minzu Road and Ximen Road intersects for more than 100 years.
 
   The founder, Guo Quan-Lu, learned the skills from Japanese masters and opened his geta factory in Tainan. The successor, Guo, Ze-Gen expanded the The powder contains scented wood like sandalwood and agarwood, combined with herbal medicine like atractylodes, rhubarb, cinnamon bark, etc. The master applies the powder on the sticks by hand and put them under the sun for drying. The finished incense sticks are wrapped by ancient-looking red paper. The scent has been passed down for more than a century. business by opening a retail shop, Zhengxin Shoe Store, at the current location to sell their products. The ups and downs of the business witnessed the prosperity and waning of geta and rubber-sole shoes.
 
   Mr Guo, Zong-Xing, the third- generation owner, firmly believes that "the tradition will strike back", so he has been persistent in keeping the business alive through his time and by passing on the craftsmanship to the fourth-generation.
