Tradition and Innovation: Zhengxing Street and the Grand Market(Da Caishi)
Route Introduction
West Market
The West Market is also called the Big Market. The block is surrounded by Guohua Street, Zhengxing Street, Ximen Road and Zhongzheng Road. Launched in 1905, it was the first public market in Taiwan. The concept of public health was newly introduced here and it helped usher in the commercial development of Tainan.
There are decades-old stores, many clothes stores and tailors' shops here. Most of the houses have stores on the ground floor and residences on the second floor and above. A combination of old and new, the West Market tells the history of a hundred years.
